Black & White by Ben Burgess Jr.

black and whiteFor whatever reason race relations have always been a difficult thing.  I’m not sure if it is a fear of the unknown or reliving our ancestors past but one thing is for certain, things are just barely better than they were back in the slavery days.  We have to do better.

Ben is a successful lawyer who is trying to become partner in his firm.  He is doing everything he possibly can to prove to them that he needs no he deserves the position but he has one major obstacle with them.  Should Ben sell his soul just to obtain partnership or should he be that respectable man that he was raised to be and let the chips fall where they may?

Bill is also a successful lawyer at the same firm who is also trying for the partnership.  While Bill has a good winning record, his chances for partner are greater than Ben’s for a reason that should not be taken into consideration.  How will Bill deal with receiving a position that was biased from the start?  Is he selling his soul or just going along with the flow?

Black & White is a book that even if you aren’t living it you can relate to.  It is about how without knowing all the facts, basically we all are a little racist.  Do we judge people on their character or on events that happened in the past?  This book makes you ask many questions of yourself and why you may or may not do things.  Burgess has brought an issue that has been plaguing society to the forefront and is making you think.  I love the story line and the way the characters make you feel like you are walking in their shoes.  I was asking question of myself while reading and to me that is the sign of a great novel and author.  I would encourage you to read this novel, great job Burgess!

Black & White is available for purchase through (Kindle and Paperback) and (Paperback only).

Daddy’s Girl by Ben Burgess Jr.

daddy's girlGrowing up we have dreams and fantasies.  We may see a picture or watch a movie and think “Wow, I want a life just like that when I grow up.”  We watch others and see how their lives are going and we know what we should and should not do, what we will and will not do.  We set our plan and we go for it!  Then POW! life happens and everything changes.  There is nothing wrong with changing the direction that you were planning on going in but it is how you make the change and how you adapt that will determine how successful you will be in life.

Nick Johnson has had an interesting life.  It has not been the life that he has planned for but then again Nick hasn’t had a solid plan.  Nick is a free spirit, he just kind of goes where the wind blows him if whatever he plans doesn’t go the way he planned it.  He is a carpenter by trade but drinking and partying is the job of choice for Nick.  When Nick is thrown a life altering change, will he deal with it the way that he has always dealt with life or will he step up and be the man that he needs to be?

Daddy’s Girl is a great read!  It is all about choices and good, bad or indifferent and how we choose to deal with them.  Burgess has touched on some very good points in this novel about decisions and the choices we make.  This is a very easy read because it flows very well but it is an emotional read at the same time making this a book that I would gladly recommend to all.  I look forward to reading more from Burgess in the future, continued success!

Love and Happiness by Ben Burgess Jr.

love and happinessLove is a word that is thrown around a lot but when it is said, what is truly meant by it?  Are you just saying it because you feel that is the right thing to do or are you saying it because you have genuine feeling for that person?  Happiness is one of those feelings that is different for everyone.  According to the dictionary, happiness means:  a state of well-being and contentment, joya pleasurable or satisfying experience.  Different things and different events make people happy but are you truly happy or are you just skating by?

Karen and Chris are college sweethearts that are the true meaning of opposites attract.  Karen is a party girl and Chris is more disciplined and laid back.  Through their differences and difficulties, they made it work into a beautiful marriage with two beautiful girls. When life really started to kick in and kick butt, the house became divided and started to grow distant.  How can you say that you love someone but you are not willing to fight for total happiness?  Is it more about total happiness or your happiness alone?

Love & Happiness is a book about life lessons.  How you deal with the life that you are dealt and what you should do about it. This story is a great story regarding who you are and who you TRULY want to be.  The characters are so in tune with each other this novel could either be your own life or a movie.  You can totally relate to the life situations that are going on within this novel and you have a feeling of wanting to help the underdog but with the twists and turns ~ who is the real underdog?  I would highly recommend this novel, it is excellent reading for anyone who likes a good book.  It keeps you engrossed so you will not want to put it down until you find out what happens next!  Great job Ben Burgess Jr., continued success!

Love & Happiness is available for purchase through (both Kindle and paperback) and (both Nook and paperback).

Wounded by Ben Burgess Jr.

WoundedHurt people hurt people is a phrase used regarding people who have been hurt in life by someone who they cared for and in turn they hurt people who care for them.  It is an ongoing cycle because of their previous hurt and most times they don’t even realize that they are purposely hurting people or why they are hurting them.  This type of destructive behavior happens more often than not but the real question is can it be stopped or do they WANT to stop it?

Samantha Miller from as early as she could remember has had horrible memories of abuse in her life.  Sam’s mother was a junkie and would pimp her out for a fix to any and every man who would help her.  It is no wonder that Samantha has commitment issues and issues with men in general, but because of her earlier years this has also made her put up a wall so high that only her two friends Silka and Jamie and ever get through to her.  Adding to her disdain for men, Samantha is a dancer so she really see men as nothing individuals.  Using her stage name Isis, her main goal is to convert as many women who are straddling the fence as she can and leave them broken and wanting more.  That is until Sasha started working at the club and she sets out on her newest conquest only to be thrown for a loop.  Will this cycle of hurt continue on or will “Isis” be stopped in her tracks and converted into a new woman?

Wounded is a story dealing with today’s issues ~ child sexual abuse, rape, sexual discovery, gay bashing and general gender discrimination.  Life is hard enough just LIVING without having additional issues to boot and this book takes you through some of the issues that are ongoing in today’s society that once was hidden but have come to the forefront.  I applaud Burgess for writing this type of book, it is not easy to write a book about something that you don’t have first hand experience with but is a touchy subject.  I enjoyed this story it sends you through a variety of emotions and that is one of the things that I look for in a drama novel.  The characters make you feel like you are experiencing what they are going through or have been through.  I look forward to more works from Burgess in the future!

Wounded can be purchased through (paperback and Kindle),, (paperback and Nook) and the authors website:

Monster by Ben Burgess Jr.

monsterLove and loyalty should go hand in hand when in a committed relationship, but how do you deal when the person that you are loyal to and are in love with no longer feels the same way about you?  Do you do your best to cope with the situation or turn your back on love forever?

Ken Ferguson has had an interesting life.  Ken has grown up with self-esteem issues because he is very dark-skinned and was teased as a child, he doesn’t know what healthy love looks like because his parents are the poster children for being in a dysfunctional relationship.  The only thing that Ken has going for himself is the fact that he is a very nice and sweet guy, this makes his friends love him all the more and as he gets older it draws the women to him.  When Ken gets his heart-broken by the one woman who he thought was going to be his wife this changes Ken, changes him into something that he can deal with and something that no one wants to see.  How will Ken survive in life with this mentality or will he survive at all?

Monster is a very well written love story.  This story makes you smile and at times it makes you frown but the fact that it ignites your emotions is going to keep you reading.  The story line is strong, the characters keep you talking and questioning them to get the answers that you want or maybe need but it keeps you there in the story.  This is my first read by Ben Burgess Jr. and I look forward to reading more from him in the future.

Monster is available for purchase through (paperback and Kindle) and (paperback and Nook).
